Notes for Alexander Aikman
"Searching for information on the parents of Alexander Aikman who imigrated to USA (Somerset New Jersey) from Glascow, Scotland about 1730 and his brother John who imigrated to the USA between 1735 and 1740. These Aikman`s probably came from the Mid-lowlands ares of eastern Scotland."

The AIKMAN family, lairds of Carney, Ross and Brambleton, were seated in Scotland from the 11th century onward. Their coat-of-arms relates to the knightly deed that gave the family its name, which, in English, means the "Oakman". This deed of Scottish history has been rendered famous by Shakespeare in his tragedy "MacBeth" and is therefore of unusual interest. The founder of the house was an officer of the forces which overthrew the ursurper, MacBeth, and restored the Scottish throne to rhe rightful King, Malcolm III.

In attacking, our ancestor planned a surprise - - -each soldier advancing through the wood of Birnam (which even today is clothed with magnificent oak trees) was ordered to cover himself with boughs, that he might seem part of the forest. [early camoflauge trick!) Shakespeare made it part of the witches' prophecy: MacBeth shall never vanquished be until great Birnham Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him!

The Aikman coat-of-arms displays the oak tree symbol and the family motto is "Sub Robere
Virtus" (Valour beneath the Oak".

I descend from John and Jean Aikman who came from Scotland to New Jersey before 1740. John's brother, Alexander, came over around 1730. As yet I haven't determined who their parents were.

Let me know if you wish to exchange info, cousin.

Hey Diane:
This may be a shot in the dark but I have a book entitled Ancaster's Heritage about the early settlers of Ancaster Twp, Wentworth Co.
Ontario. In it is a short account about an Aikman family from your general area. I quote it from the book: "John Aikman 1764-1841, son of Alexander Aikman who came from Londonderry to Northumberland Co Pa (now Columbia Co) and located with three sons at Cabin Run. He bought 900 acres....and after problems...moved to Fort Augusta and then to Morris Co., New Jersey. After the revolutionary war he moved back to Pa. but his son John had moved to Canada (Fort Niagara) in 1776 and had served with the British throughout the war"
I realize that the dates are later but the names are the same and from the general area you stated. Might be worth a looksee. Hope something pans out for you! Good luck
Dale McDonald

Does anyone have any info on the ancestors of brothers, Alexander AIKMAN (b.1690, Scotland-came to NJ in 1730) and John AIKMAN (b. 1685, Scotland d.1755-came to NJ in 1740).
Anyone know how to get access to ship manifests from this era? Probably fromm Glasgow to Cape May, NJ in 1730 & 1740.
Please email me at dianneaikman@worldnet.att.net

Dianne - look in Twelve Families...An American Experience by William F. O'Dell. Published by Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1981. Chapter 3 has a history of John & Alexander Aikman and their journey to America. If you can't find this book I can send you the chapter (only 4 pages).

Hi!
If it's not too late, I'd like a copy of this information also. I can trace my family back to James Aikman, b. 1750, through John, b. 1783 (Kty?), Samuel, b. 1814 Davies Cty, Indiana, Charles b.1854, Vermillion Cty, Indiana to my grandfather Louis P. b. 1883, Vermillion Cty. Before James, I'm lost! If anyone is following my line I do have information, and also copies of pamphlets published around the turn of the century for Aikman Family Reunions in Indiana.

Thanks,

Kris Aikman Dewey

I recently received a copy of a book article on the Aikman line. I believe the book title is "Yell County Heritage" pub by Yell Co. Arkansas Historical & Genealogical Society; 1998. Summarized, the first couple of paragraphs:
Alexander Aikman Family:
Alexander Aikman, born 1690 in Scotland, died 1765. Wife unknown. Alexander Aikman emigrated to New Jersey in approximately 1730. His brother, John Aikman emigrated in approximately 1740. It is believed that Alexander had four children:
Born: Isabella Aikman, b 1733, died 1814.
Born: John Aikman, b 1735, died 1806.
Born: William Aikman, b 1738, died 1805.
Born: Alexander Aikman, b about 1740, died 1777.

William Aikman Family
William Aikman, born 1738, died 1805. Wife unknown. William had nine children, seven names unknown:
Born: Alexander Aikman, b about 1770, died in Pope Co., Arkansas in 1835. Wife unknown. He had seven children: sons William, Willis, Alexander, Wright and daughters Denicy, Mariah and Pleasant. All sons raised families in Pope Co. Following standard convention, Alexander (b 1770) should be the oldest son, and Willis should be the first name of Alexander’s (b 1770) wife’s father.
Born: William E. Aikman, b about 1780, died about January 1824, Lafayette Co, MO (will probated February 14, 1824). Married Jane "Jenny" Montgomery in Knox Co, TN in 1807. Following standard convention, William should be the third oldest son.

Keep in mind this is all undocumented, it's someone elses research. I do have documentation starting with William E. Aikman, my line.
